Laniakea Beach - a.k.a. Turtle Beach

I have been meaning to take MD over to Laniakea for sometime now and finally got that chance yesterday afternoon.   Endangered Green Sea Turtles feed off of the seaweed and limu right off shore and on the shore so they are known to be laying on the beach daily.    Checking out Laniakea would be the perfect tie in to our Honu Nest Patrol here by our house with the Kailua Turtle Watch group.  I believe I am officially ending our Turtle Track search on Tuesdays and Thursdays but that is an entirely separate post.

We had a spectacular afternoon.  Five rainbows, hundreds of sea turtles, and great weather.  It was amazing to watch the Honu silhouettes swim along the back lit waves.   The turtle guardians did a wonderful job educating the gobs of tourists.  I suppose to a local, I am considered a tourist as well.  My friend, Alli, writes the newsletter for the volunteer group.  We plan to volunteer together with our boys so we can tag team the babysitting duties with Guardian duties.  They were not kidding when they said it take a village!

 

After MD tired of listening to Honu facts and watching mommy take photos, he found some fun in the giant walls of sand.  He dug pretty deep and then discovered how fun it would be to dive from the top of the sand wall to the bottom.  Graceful dive, not so much.  More of a tumble, roll, tumble, face crunch but hey.. He LOVED it.

Directions to Laniakea:

H2 til the freeway ends.  Continue to follow route past Dole Pineapple Plantation until you come to a stop light.  Left will take you to Historic Haliewa, Stay Right and bypass town.  You will be heading towards Turtle Bay Resort.  Continue on for approx 4 miles.  You will see a white fence on the right (horse ranch).  Immediately after white fence, you will cross a small bridge and you should park on the right hand side of the road after crossing the bridge.  You will see an obvious dirt parking area.  The Sea Turtles will be enjoying their day across the street.

Great activity for the kids.  Another opportunity to get them outside and learning.  Don't forget sunscreen!

Remember, Show Turtles Aloha:

*State and Federal law prohibits harassment of the sea turtles.
*Observe the Turtles from a distance.
*Do not touch, feed, harasss, or tease the sea turtles.
